UNHCR says nearly 2.4 million refugees will need resettlement in 2027, even as available places shrink across major host countries. The agency warns that many refugees cannot return home and remain unsafe in their current countries of asylum. Afghans form the largest group needing resettlement, followed by refugees from South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and Rohingya communities from Myanmar. UN-assisted departures fall sharply from 116,000 in 2024 to about 37,000 in 2025, raising concern over reduced quotas and suspended programmes.
