The European Parliament approves the EU Return Regulation, replacing the 2008 Return Directive with stricter rules for undocumented migrants. The law extends detention periods, introduces tougher re-entry bans, and creates a unified European Return Order enforceable across all 27 EU states. It also allows residence searches, device checks, and offshore “return hubs” in third countries. Supporters argue the reform improves deportation efficiency, while human rights groups warn it weakens legal protections and creates unsafe external detention systems. The regulation now moves to the European Council for final approval.
