Australia and Vanuatu sign the Nakamal Agreement in Canberra, creating a major economic and security pact aimed at preventing foreign military bases in Vanuatu. The deal strengthens Australia’s role as Vanuatu’s primary policing and security partner, covering intelligence, cybersecurity, maritime security, police training, infrastructure, and disaster response. It also reflects Australia’s concern over China’s growing Pacific influence, including wharf, debt, and policing ties. However, the final agreement is softer than earlier drafts, allowing Vanuatu to keep Chinese links while consulting Australia on future infrastructure deals.
