Ghana’s Parliament passes the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, introducing some of the strictest anti-LGBTQ+ measures in Africa. The law imposes prison terms for same-sex relations, LGBTQ+ identity, and advocacy, while also requiring citizens to report suspected violations. Amendments exempt lawyers, healthcare workers, and journalists acting in professional capacities. Supporters argue the legislation protects traditional cultural and religious values, while human rights organizations warn it could institutionalize discrimination and fear. International financial institutions, including the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, have previously warned that such laws may affect foreign aid and investment flows.
