The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to South African jurist and former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay for her efforts to strengthen peace, international law and accountability for war crimes. Pillay builds a pioneering legal career from defending anti-apartheid activists to serving on South Africa’s High Court, the Rwanda tribunal and the International Criminal Court. Her judicial work helps establish rape and sexual violence as crimes against humanity and acts of genocide. The Nobel Committee presents her recognition as a defence of the international legal order and protection of victims of serious international crimes.
