The IAEA Board of Governors terminates its 2011 finding that Syria violated nuclear safeguards obligations, closing a nearly two-decade investigation into past secret nuclear activity. The decision follows increased cooperation from Syria’s post-Assad government, including access to the Al-Kibar site and other undeclared facilities. Inspectors confirm the destroyed Al-Kibar facility was a covert reactor and secure discovered uranium material under safeguards. Syria remains subject to routine NPT inspections, but the resolution restores its international nuclear standing and may reopen access to peaceful nuclear cooperation in medicine, agriculture, and energy.
