According to the stock-market value as of August 15th, the number of American companies among the 100 largest public companies globally has decreased to 59, from a peak of 62 in 1999. General Electric Co. has regained the top spot from Microsoft Corp., which has now dropped to the fourth position. GE had previously held the No. 1 ranking from 1996 to 1998. In the latest ranking, Europe is home to 52 of the world's 100 largest financial companies, a slight decrease from 54 the previous year. Germany and the U.K. are the top European countries, with 11 each, while France has seven. On the other hand, Japan had 15 companies listed on the financial list, down by one from the previous year. Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi has climbed two spots to become No. 2 on the list.
