Ford Motor Co. and Qualcomm Inc. are confirm the start of their joint venture called Wingcast, to deliver wireless services, including internet access and safety services, to the No. 2 automaker's vehicles, beginning late next year. Jac Nasser, Ford's president and chief executive, states that "Wingcast is Ford's vehicle for redefining the future of mobile communications." He also adds that they are transforming the automobile into the next mobile portal and creating a new company that will develop and deliver a collection of leading-edge technologies and services.

Eurostat, the statistical agency of the European Union, says that in May, the trade surplus of the 11-member euro-zone shrank considerably, surprising analysts as oil costs soared. The surplus reaches 100 million euros ($91.6 million), compared with 1.5 billion euros a year earlier. Analysts had expected a surplus of 800 million euros for May.

Officials are expected to collect evidence of what they believe is a collusive effort by the German publishers to control prices of books sold to German consumers by an online bookshop based in Austria. The EU competition commission suspects that Bertelsmann and more than 30 other German publishers colluded to stop supplying books to Vienna-based Libro AG after the company's Internet arm began cutting prices on books ordered by customers in Germany.

The executives are expected to meet with North Korean leader Mr. Kim Jong Il, who invited them during his summit with South Korean President Mr. Kim Dae-jung in June. The visitors arrived in the airport outside Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, after traveling via the Chinese capital of Beijing. North Korean media executives welcomed the southern visitors with bouquets.

in almost a first, Excite At Home Corp. is planning to offer a service that allows users to store and stream video clips for free via its Internet infrastructure. This move is aimed at increasing demand for high-speed internet connections. The service is part of a partnership between the company, based in Redwood City, California, and Media 100 Inc., a maker of software based in Marlboro, Massachusetts, that is used to create and deliver internet video. Media 100 has developed a free version of its software that customers can download from Excite At Home, and use to prepare video clips for internet broadcast, which is known as streaming.
