Governments adopting stringent new immigration rules, individuals continue to seek "political asylum" by claiming they are fleeing oppression in their home countries, although over 90 percent of them are often categorized as "economic migrants".

A WTO dispute panel has upheld a French ban on imports of building products from Canada containing the carcinogen asbestos, in a decision that could potentially help reduce opposition to the World Trade Organization among environmental groups. Though the decision has not been officially published yet, it has been released to France and Canada this week. This marks the first time that a WTO case's ruling has explicitly prioritized issues such as environmental protection above free trade, which is bad news for Canada as it produces most of the world's asbestos.

The U.S. President is reviewing the Congress' proposal to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a controversial move aimed at deterring the Palestinian leader, Mr. Yasser Arafat, from declaring a Palestinian state. Boeing, a U.S.-based aircraft manufacturing company, has revised its commercial aircraft market estimate to more than double its previous projection by including aviation services required by airlines for efficient fleet operations. According to the "Current Market Outlook-2000" report released by the company at the recently concluded Farnborough International Air Show on Sunday, the total market for services and future aeroplane deliveries is predicted to be worth over $4 trillion over the next two decades.

In an announcement today, the Treasury Department is projecting to pay down $45 billion on the federal debt in the current third quarter, with an expected cash balance of $50 billion by September 30. Additionally, it expects a net paydown of about $10 billion for the fourth quarter with a $30 billion cash balance at the end of December. These projections were announced on Monday and are slightly below the previous estimates made by the Treasury Department in May, which projected a $47 billion paydown and a $45 billion ending balance for the current quarter.
